Since its inception in 1913, the Long Beach Unified School District’s Long Beach School for Adults (LBSA) has helped thousands of local adult community members achieve their educational goals regardless of their stage in life.

Today, LBSA provides educational opportunities for more than 1,300 students over the age of 18 through programs that prepare them to be productive and contributing members of society.

Programs offered by LBSA include:

  • English as a Second Language, the school’s largest program. Students learn English and participate in conversation classes to boost their language skills through this multi-tiered program.
  • High School Diploma (HSD), a program available for adults who wish to earn their high school diploma.
  • High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), an alternative credential to a high school diploma. LBSA students can either test immediately to receive their HiSET certificate or enroll in a program designed to prepare them for the exam.
  • Adult Basic Education, a foundational course for adult students reading below an eighth-grade level that can assist in developing the reading, writing and math skills needed to transition to HSD or HiSET programs.
  • Career and Technical Education coursesdesigned to prepare adult students to meet the requirements for jobs in Animal Care or Custodial Services, as well as careers as a Campus Security Officer or Certified Nurses Assistant.

LBSA is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and operates September through June with free classes from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The average age of enrolled students is between 45 to 55 years old.

Enrollment is open throughout the year with classes filling quickly. Prospective students can learn more at lbsa.30study.com or call 562-595-8893 to make an enrollment appointment.
